Historical Album for Postage Stamps of the Bahamas
The Bahamas - a group of islands southeast of Florida and northeast of Cuba - became an independent nation on July 10, 1973, ending three centuries of British colonial rule. The country's 4,400 square miles are divided among about 700 islands; one of these is San Salvador, which was probably Christopher Columbus' first landing site in the New World in 1492. Tourism is a major factor in the Bahamian economy, in part due to the country's mild winter weather. Nassau, the country's capital and chief port, is a popular tourist center.
